She's had very little exposure to the ocean, and I, of course, am the mother who sets her back a decade. We walked down to the surf and I plopped her down in the sand so we could watch the waves up close when all of a sudden, wham....a wave smackdown. One might have thought I'd have seen it coming, but sadly, it somehow snuck up on me.
We were both soaked from the waist down, shoes and all.
M was rather put out. She started crying and yelling waterstopnostopwaterstop at the ocean, which responded by curling and foaming and laughing at us. J stood a bit farther up on the shore shaking his head. I decided since I was already wet, I might as well get wetter.
Because nothing says freedom like standing fully clothed in the ocean on a Sunday in January.

and so you must! i have a kiwi friend who takes no prisoners on the ocean-swimming-at-funny-times-of-the-year thing. and come to think of it as a child i had a whale of a time swimming in the sea in november with seaweed landing in my hair from the waves...
Oh, it looks glorious! I love the photos, two free spirits in front of the wide open sea!
Oh, I'm envious!
Stopjenstop! You're making me miss my pre-uk homes! Hawaii and of course the Bay Area, where Santa Cruz was only a crazy over-the-hill drive away!
You can say it again at the top of your lungs to be heard over the surf, "Because nothing says freedom like standing fully clothed in the ocean on a Sunday in January." Wooohooo!
There is no going within 50 feet of water with kids without getting wet. It's the law!
Oh yeah...we went down waterfront way today too. Sunny and 70 here, as usual. We stuck to the mainland.
Love the photo and the description of the laughing-at-you-waves. Excellent!
I was thinking...how fun would it be to do a blog photo exchange circle thing where we all post photos of what it looks like where we live with that current day's temp. What a range it would be. How awesome to see that.
Do you know how happy this post & the picture of you & M made me today? I swear, sitting here on the East Coast with a chilly drizzle, I could feel the warmth of the California sunshine, the warmth radiating off of you & M, and the sand between my toes.
Yum.
Yum.
Double-yum.
It was unseasonably warm here today.. around 60 degrees or so. It would be a great day to go to the beach. The pictures are great!
Peace,
~Chani
LOVE it. How so very passionate of you.
And I love getting a glimpse of you here.
I love your last line. It's beautiful. Makes me want to head to the ocean (tho it's a bit of a drive!) The scary thing is how warm it has been here in the east for January, makes me worry about our planet.
Look how cute you guys are!!! Before we moved here (East Coast) we lived on 32nd Ave in the Parkside District (not far from West Portal). We would walk to Ocean beach all the time.
I miss San Francisco.
Beautiful post! We accidentally let a teeny little wave lick my then-toddler son's toes once and he insisted on standing up in the bathtub for like, the next year. He's over it now...
Gorgeous! You and the beach. What a pleasure to see your FACE. YOU.
Wow, I can relate that she was freaked out, but that looks like a lovely day!
Looks like y'all had a fun time. I am envious! Wish I could have gone with....
I love the beach and the ocean and we live about 1 hour from the shore now, too far for a daily visit unfortunately.
I always love when we get a glimpse of you and M.
It looks fabulous! But you did at least take off your shoes, right?
"and I, of course, am the mother who sets her back a decade.
too funny.
and I love how M asserts herself against the water. brilliant response.
and apparently one could head to the shore out NY way this weekend...climate runamok...
Gorgeous!
btw, I tagged you for a meme...
Those of us stuck in the Midwest will just have to live vicariously through your photos!
Looks like fun, even with the water disobeying and all.
Yes, California weather is one of the perks that keeps us in this overpriced state. Looks like you had a perfect Sunday.
you just gave me an awesome present. Not only a picture of the ocean ( I swear one day I will live on the beach), but a picture of you with M. Now I can imagine you all the better.
(and talk about sass girl? You look like you got it in spades as well...)
I love it! And the photos are amazing.
Green with envy over here.
Green.
So true! Even in Texas, it's just way too cold to hit the beach in January. I envy your temperate weather.
I'll bet that took your breath away! What fun, even if a little wet.
Carrie
Jealousy. Oozing. Gaahhhhh.
I love it! I moved inland from two coastal communitites, and boy do I ever miss that ocean.I would even take a wave smackdown
Love the picture of you two!
I miss CA!
I ache for Santa Cruz
Remind the Ocean how much I Love and Miss Her and that I will be back.
Thanks for the glimpse....
