China, Oh China. Entire families buried alive. We are small.

18,000 people. China, oh China. And Burma. Burma where people are dying first from the cyclone and now from the lack of sustenance. China. And tornadoes. Here. We aren't talking about it. Why aren't we talking about it? We see the images on the TV and we don't know what to say, we are preoccupied with our lives, who will win the primary, what should I eat, how will we manage to pay our bills. People are dying. There isn't enough food and 1 billion people live on less than $1 a day and they cannot afford commodities. They. Cannot. Feed. Their. Children. And we watch and we watch and we watch and we wonder what's coming next or when it's finally coming for us because it's out of our hands really, we are that small.
China, Oh China. Entire families buried alive. We are small.

We are so small.
We are not separate. It's not "us" and "them".
first we acknowledge our smallness, then we try and take a step.
first we acknowledge our smallness, then we try and take a step.
We are small and don't know how to digest something so huge.
I have spent this whole day thinking in the same circles.
oh jen. . seems we are struggling with the same things today. as you said, "i know"
A friend felt a sense of impending doom a couple of weeks ago, and feels like it was because of China and Burma. I feel so impotent thinking of it.
I've been burying my head in the sand these days. Too emotional. But I caught the coverage today and I cried in public.
it's devastating.
Now don't hang on
Nothin' lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
I know, Jen. I know, I know, I know. And yet...I really don't know at all, do I? :(
We cannot help all and we cannot help everywhere, but we can help some someplaces.
With 2 nieces from China, you can bet that this has been weighing heavily on my mind. You bet.
What to do - that's not easy, but I know I'll do something.
Drove back home on Mother's Day through an area in Oklahoma where 18 died in tornadoes. It was frightening. An entire house scattered across a field like bits of paper. Wow.
I posted over at eatdrinkbetter on how easy it is to save the money on your food bill in order to feed 100 children who need a meal. Check it out if you have a chance.
I had to turn off the radio today while I was driving to a meeting.
I just could.not.take.it.
there are lots of us thinking about it, working it over in our heads, saddened at the horror.
this person, at least, has not pushed it aside.
It's awful. Tragedy. It could happen here but not many think that way.
People. Humanity. Families are families.
No kidding; the silence has been startling.
We've got a lot to say about Miley Cyrus, though.
I think if people talked about it they'd have to reconcile the fact that we are them. Like Chani said, there is no separation.
I think it is hard for people to focus on it when so many here at home are struggling. But that does not mean it should be ignored.
Today I shared a blog post about this and Darfur.
I think it's hard when you do, and it's never, ever even close to enough.
we are. indeed. small.
It's horrific. My SIL is from China, and her parents still live there. I called my brother because I was horrified at the thought that they might have been victims. Fortunately, they are safe.
so small indeed.
Small... and feeling helpless. I don't know what to do.
And for every tragedy we get three more reality television shows with which to distract ourselves and I'm entirely convinced it's the reason that Pop music exists, to get us through the day without having to think about anything aside from what Paula Abdul might wear tonight.
We're all culpable. The world is small but can feel so very vast.
Yeah. the new. it isn't news, it's shame in broadcast form.
So small.
Yes a zillion times over.
