Me: Well, you can't have a baby in your tummy right now but you can when you get older
M: Why?
Me: You need to be older because your body needs to change a little bit and then you have to decide you want a baby in your tummy and then you make one (dammit i can't believe i said that wait for it now count with me people you all know what's coming 3, 2, 1.....)
M: How do I make a baby?
Me: Dude, you are three. I'm just not prepared to get into this right now. (Whatever, call me a chickenshit, at least I was honest and didn't use the phrase twinkle in my eye)
M: Ok. Orange is my favorite color.
Me: Me too, baby. Me too.

Oh THAT conversation. Tricky. But it sounds like you dodged it well! :)
Orange is my favourite colour, too. ;)
Oh you are so lovely honest.
I asked what it was that she really wanted to know. In the end, it was just that babies grew from little tiny to bigger. Whew.
Oh, it's on now. Just wait.
But you handled it just right.
our "talk" to months to get through - a whole pregnancy in fact. At nearly 5 he picked the best moment ever to ask the key question "what part of the daddy connects with the mommy part?" - all at a restaurant with just me and Matt's dad. Nice, totally my fault. I had led him down the garden path....
Wow, you kind of stepped into that one. I think I would make orange my new favorite color too.
hahahahah!
well, you did the right thing, i think. when ben was four, i overshared, and he was stunned. and probably? scarred for life.
so what happened to 'the man putting his willy into the lady and putting in the seed' thing? we had that very early on but then we brits are a bit earthy...
Orange, orange is good. :)
we started this questioning at about 4 and the making the baby part? i said it's magic. i know shame on me, but i rationalized that it is magical (at times) so it's not a lie nor a stork.
i had to fess up about 3 months ago, age 6, when she said "no, how exactly does the baby get in there mommy, just TELL me" and so i did.
she was very quiet and without prompting said that she pinky swore to never talk about it with her friends. sigh.
You know what? How perfectly did you handle THAT?
I might add that orange is the color of the sacral chakra that governs sexuality. Just sayin'...
*feel free to bitch slap me at blogher*
FYI - those conversations get much less fun AND much less easy to dodge as they get older. Yikes.
I would have just said "Hey, look over there!" and then run away.
ha ha ha ha
just the other day MQ asked me AGAIN how babies get out of Mommy's tummies, and I told her, and she asked more questions, and we talked about a "tunnel" and whatnot, but THANK GOD she has not yet asked how the baby gets in there in the first place.
Good save. Good save.
My plan is to distract with cookies.
*laugh* That's the trick! Don't answer by changing the topic!!! *laugh*
Yeah, you can probably dodge the bullet until four. :)
Just be sure you get to her before the other 3-yr-olds on the school yard. I beat my son's friend to the punch by about three months.
The best follow up discussion we ever had came years later around the topic of condoms (don't ask how we got there...something about a funny ad circulating around the internet.) My son asked, "Well, if you don't want to have a baby, why would you have sex?"
If only I'd mentioned the color orange...
Such a good call, Jen. Minus the "dude," that's pretty much what I said when Eleanor asked about it. "Just not ready for that conversation, honey... get back to me in a few years."
OK - so laughing at you and liv. You dodged that one good this time, sister. Next time you might not get so lucky...
Orange is my favorite color too ;)
Like Beck says, this will only get less fun as she gets older...
Orange is my favourite colour, too.
Heidi
Oh yeah. I've generally been able to head it off at the pass with the "wait 'til you're older" part. But...
Yup - that conversation is just going to have to wait until I am sure he is ready to comprehend it in its entirety. I doubt it will come before he is 6, hopefully not until 7 or 8 - but not beyond that. I was one of those kids who somehow made it to 3rd or 4th grade before I knew. I think I was probably the last one my age to find out!!!
You have skills, obviously.
It's okay to chicken out at three although, in retrospect, it might have been easier to have the talk back then. I still can't erase the image of the mix of knowing/yuck on D's face when we talked about it a few months ago.
hilarious.
