I mentioned awhile back that change was in order. It's been brewing.
When I dream, I dream of this:
I want to move into international work. I am growing weary of domestic poverty and community development and it's time to push the envelope. J will follow me anywhere. He's said it. He means it. We want to do this before we settle in Belize. Before it's too late.
Thing is: I can't get a second look because I have no prior international experience. The decade of domestic counts for zip, nada, nothing. But I just need a foot in the door.
Universe. I am calling out to you. I might not present with the necessary international experience at a first glance, but I am scrappy as hell. I can do this.
Africa, Asia, India. I hear you calling. We are ready.

That's an impressive dream. You'll do it, somehow someway. The universe will hear you.
I love your approach: "Hello world. Here I am. Can you please take me on so that I can kick serious ass. Thank you kindly for your consideration."
I'm surprised that the domestic work isn't taken into consideration. I have the same dream, myself, and little experience, but I know that organizations like MSF (Doctors Without Borders) see working in remote Canadian communities as valuable and equate it with international experience.
Check them out and just keep putting the message out there.
The Universe would be a fool not to hear you and make it so.
My offer for you to come visit is always open. My boyfriend Flo works in the development sector as a medicinal plant and perma-culture workshop facilitator. I'm sure he will be happy to take you along to his projects so you can get a better idea of what things are like on this side. He also has a friend who helps women and aids orphans to establish food gardens.
To get an idea of the kind of ngo work done in South Africa have a look at http://sangonet.org.za/portal/ There is a large vacancies button on the right hand side.
I'm a firm believer of imagining the future into being. And the more imagine blocks you have to build with the clearer your vision of your future will be.o
As you know, I like scrappy. may the universe hear your call and give you what you need - cause I have a feeling you Jen can move planets if the feeling comes upon you.
If anyone can get in the door, I think it's you Jen!
Have you considered the Peace Corp? My understanding from a few volunteers I know in Thailand is that they do not engage in propaganda or intelligence work. They do legitimate development projects. That would be a good way to get the required experience and get you away from the drip-drip-drip of the bandaid approach to poverty here.
Peace,
~Chani
Live those dreams! Go talk with Planet Nomad -- http://planetnomad.wordpress.com/
Good luck to you.
The non-profit sector is tough, especially the international portion. I know this because it's what my sister has just made the leap to. AFter years of volunteer work (on top of her regular job), she came over to the UK last year to do a 1 year masters programme; spent the last few months volunteering in London; and is moving back to the states tomorrow (really!) to take up a new position with an international non-profit group on the East Coast. She's sooo happy about it.
yay for you!! I know that the door will open for you at just the right time.
I totally dig you & your scrappy self.
You would be SO GOOD at international development. I just know it. I'll keep my ears open. There has to be something excellent out there for you.
Have you contacted Unicef?
Jen - you should e-mail me a resume. I have some connections at a ... large, international relief organization HQ'd in the South... (I'm not going to write it, but you know who they are.)
I have no doubt that you will fulfill your dream.
I love this dream and it is so you. And, oh, how I will delight in seeing this come true as I know it will.
did you know that JP works in international public health? He is big into policy issues and surveillance for emerging infections in the third world. Hence the upcoming trips to several countries over the next few months.
Ms Jen, I am confident that when the time is right the universe will put you in exactly the right place. Just you wait and see...
I want this dream for you and know the universe will hear you.
you'll make it ...
i feel it ...
I have no doubt that if you don't give up, your dream will come true.
Carrie
Sending some positive vibrations and thoughts your way. At least you know what you want. So there must be a way to do it.
Love your approach too.
The Universe will answer.
I know it.
WHY aren't my comments showing up anywhere- I posted comments on the last entry too! Mother f#*king blogger!!! (sorry)
While not in relief work (fashion never saved lives) I was recently in the same postion- having the experience but not meeting the people who would see the translatable skills. But it happened.
It'll happen for you too.
Hello. This is the universe responding. Send me an e-mail, Jen. I might have a couple contacts for you.
