While (poorly) evaluating someone's risk of suicide:
Him: You know...wanting to kill yourself is like robbing a bank. You know what I mean, when you are sitting in front of the bank, you have a gun, and you have it staked out? You know where you are going, which guards are weak, and what time of day? That's how I think about killing myself...and right now, I am only sitting outside the bank. I don't have a gun. In the past I had it all planned out. For me, it's just like when you want to rob a bank. Know what I'm saying?
Me: Well, yes, but without the whole bank part.
Him: Yeah, ok. But I mean, haven't you ever thought about robbing a bank?
Me: Well...not so much.
Him: Really?
Me: Dude, I couldn't pull that off.
Him: You're probably right.
And to the magnificient Dr. Martin Luther King: We haven't made as much progress as we should have. Please know we are still trying to get to a place of fairness and justice for all. We haven't given up on your dream.

Yes - a little bit every day.
Not the bank robbing thing(which I just snorted coffee to), but the MLK day.
And here I was wondering whose birthday it was. I hope I get excused on account of being German.
And I never contemplated bank robbing or suicide. No excuse needed for that.

I've been touched (and saddened) by this last series of posts of yours. Thank you for opening all our eyes to issues that are otherwise swept under the rug. You truly are a special person. The world needs more people like you.
The amazing thing about Dr. King is that he manages to live on because his words still reveal to us what matters, the changes that we have to push foward in this big ol' world of ours. Because of people like you.

'Poorly' evaluating? That sounds bad. Darling, don't take all the problems of the world on your shoulders. We won't give up on his dream, but we have to find a way to live and be happy too. We owe it to ourselves and our children to love ourselves as well as our neighbours*.

I've been out of commission for a few days, exchanging blogging for solo-parenting while my husband was at a conference. These last thre posts are really something. I can just see M pulling out the mats at the shelter.
I hope the weather has gotten warmer.

I do believe MLK had some very important things to say. Whether they've been heard or not ~ the jury's still out. While he's been turned into a cultural icon, I'm not convinced he was heard. He made some very revolutionary statements.

That is a beautiful quote. I am amazed how many "new" things I learn about MLK on days like today. He is so much more than "I have a dream...", although that is equally as good.

No we haven't made as much progress as we should, but we have still made some tiny bits. We'll just have to keep at it.

There is still a lot of prejudice in the world and it's not all racial. The hatred some people have for gays, the handicapped, the elderly, and practically anyone that doesn't fit society’s definition of “normal”, boggles my mind.
That being said, I do think the world is changing, very slowly, but it is changing.
